The objectives of the study are to know the awareness and interests possessed by the retailers to protect the environment also the awareness and responsibilities of the retailers and customers  towards protecting the environment. A descriptive research is conducted, data collected through interview method and structured questionnaire and a senses survey for the retailers. For the study available 10 supermarkets in Taliparamba city were selected and 25 customers per supermarket were selected from those who visited the supermarkets for purchase. The members involved in retail business have very insufficient knowledge about green practices. Awareness of environmental impact and green practice is very minimal and only 50% of the customers properly using the disposal systems provided by the Taliparamba municipality. It can be concluded that it is very difficult to find minds with the right attitude of environmental consciousness for the sustainable development of business and economy. An appropriate kind of controlling system is required for disposing wastes generated out of purchase.
