  • Ashika Pradhan

Abstract

Frailty, thy name is women was the ignominy heaped upon women by Shakespeare in his great work Hamlet. Women have been subjected to dominance, suffering and oppression since time immemorial. They have been prejudiced by the male patriarchal society as subordinate and have been prone to violence and maltreatment whether at home or outside.

With the industrialization and development in society there has been radical change in the status of women worldwide. There has been a large influx of women in mainstream workforce working in organized and unorganized sectors. As a result of which there has been an emergence of different forms of crimes and discrimination against working women. Despite of several governmental efforts and affirmative action towards gender based discrimination is the harsh reality of Indian society. Women are not provided with equal opportunity as to that of men and have been prone to violence and maltreatment. Sexual harassment at workplace is the worst amongst all.

Therefore the present paper aims at critically analyzing the emerging problems of working women, the challenges and discrimination faced by them in their daily life and the legal framework on the rights and protection available to them in India. It also aims at discussing the method or mechanism that could be adopted by the authority so as to redress the growing problem of oppression and discrimination against working women in India.
