Socio- economic Status of Schedule Caste Women in Manipur

Abstract

Womens issue is one of the most widely debated global issue in the modern society. Women?s status and the nature of the development are very much interrelated to each other as women constitute half of the world?s population. The three components of sustainable development namely environmental sustainability, Social sustainability and Economic sustainability. These are very much related to the important role of women. However, there are many questions on whether our society has accepted a women?s ability fully? The social system of India has been stratified to a multiplicity of social categories which often obscure the relative status of men and women with women being within the more disadvantaged segments of the population. Most of the SC people faced the problem of untouchables. Economically they are the poorest among the poor and are discriminated socially and culturally. Whereas SC people of Manipur are different compared with the other SC people of India. In respect of Social status, they are better than in other areas of the country. There is no problem of untouchability in Manipur. However, till date there has not been much change in the socio- economic conditions of Schedule Caste. After independence of India Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar prescribed the certain protection and safeguards for the SC?s and ST?s with the objective of promoting their educational, economic and political interest. This has so far provided various plans and programmes offering them opportunities to develop.
