A PERSPECTIVE ON INDIAN DIASPORIC LITERATURE

  • Ms. Jean Saldanha

Abstract

Indian literature in English, once called Indo-Anglian literature by critics and scholars like Dr. Srinivas Iyengar, has become a significant mainstream literature in English with international recognition in the form of Pulitzer and Booker prizes. Alongside the body of mainland Indian literature in English, there has been the growth of writing by sensitive expatriates adding a new dimension to Indian writing in English. The Indian diaspora is spread far and wide from Canada to Fiji islands. The writers of the Indian diaspora sensitise problems which are both local and global. Expatriate writing has a significant position between cultures and countries. Writers who live abroad live on the border lines or margins of two societies. These margins sometime redefine the centre.
