Abstract

Kiran Nagarkar is one of the popular writers of post colonial India.  He is a novelist with a difference. His manupulation of language is amazing. His portrayal of the character is excellent, especially of Chawl life. Nagarkar applies Chawl life in his three Novels namely Seven Sixes Are Forty Three, Ravan and Eddie and The Extras . Man is the outcome of social and economical forces, therefore his life is governed  by the Socio-economical system of his respective society. The immaculate relationship between man and woman indicates the liberal, egalitarian culture of the society.  But the wretched, pathetic condition of women defines gender-bias and gulf between man-woman relationship in Chawl life.  Nagarkars novels are set in the period of 1950s onward and deals with the man-woman status in the society. But this relation and status is based on the bias and prejudices of male supremacy.
