Abstract

The Postmodern Story of Jyoti Viswanath is a short fiction which is a remarkable milestone in the history of twentieth century Malayalam literature in English translation. As we all know that studying translated literature will probably change our idea of what is literary and memorable because translation offers us images, metaphors, and values that militate against global influences that would like to wipe out diversity. Translations to other languages have played a significant role in the wide spreading of twentieth century Malayalam poetry, prose, fiction and drama. This story is written by Chandramati and her works are marked by a pleasant wit and thought provoking themes especially when she deals with relationships. This story, written in a Meta fictional style begins with the authors address to the readers regarding the limitless freedom they can take while reading the story. The protagonist Jyoti is a representative of postmodern women. The strength of Chandramatis narrative is its natural tone which, when deployed in the anti-realist terrain of her fiction, bestows on her short stories a touch of uncommon irony
