Abstract

Linguistics is the scientific study of language. It is concerned with human language as a universal and recognizable part of the human behaviour and one of the most essential to human life. There is no way of studying language without referring to and taking example from particular languages. Linguistics does not emphasise practical knowledge or mastery of a particular language. Linguistics is learning about language rather than learning a language. It observes the features of language, classifies these features as being sound features of particular types or words belonging to particular classes on the basis of similarity or differences with other sounds and words. Linguistics is also social science because it studies language which is a form of social behaviour and exists in interaction between human beings in society
