Abstract

Indian novelists have extensively depicted the various shades of relationship in general and man-woman relationship in particular historically, sociologically, psychologically in their novels. The Indian society which had been so conventional and tradition-bound could not remain impervious to the new forces that had been so conventional and tradition-bound could not remain impervious to the new forces that had started slowly influencing it through education and social awareness. And this brought about a change in the prevalent attitudes and beliefs and accelerated a tendency which favoured a new order in place of the old. Shouri Daniel's The Salt Doll symbolically portrays the theme of isolation in man-woman relationship by freely and candidly probing the mind of Mira Cheriyan, a Syrian Christian from Kerala. She is the 'Salt Doll' playing the dual role of an audience and an actor, showing as well as witnessing the hard and bitter realities of life. TaslimaNasrin's novel French Lover (originally written in Bengali as ForashiPremik) is the tale of NilanjanaMandal, a twenty seven year old Bengali Dalit woman who moves to Paris after her arranged marriage to Kishanlal, a restaurant owner. The entire novel moves around Nila's quest for love and independence, ending in self-discovery to be a woman. The present paper aims at making a comparative study of Shouri Daniel's The Salt Doll and TaslimaNasrin'sFrench Lover in regard to man-woman relationship. Both the writers have depicted varied situations in which different layers of relationships have been explored.
