Writing on Women; the Female Viewpoint and Feminism by both Male and Female Authors

  • Sima Singh

Abstract

Feminism is an ideology against domination and mistreatment of women in patriarchal system. The goal of feminism is to establish and secure equal political, economic and social rights and equal opportunities for women. It challenges male- controlled thoughts in society. The same is reflected in the writings of the male and female authors who depict their own emotions and mental frame of mind-set.

Many critics are of the opinions that since men and women have different set of their life experiences, the writings of male and female authors will differ, as well. Some consider that male authors are not able to write correctly from the female perspective or present feminist ideals because they have not experienced life from a womans perspective. The majority of the time, life from the female point of view is portrayed in literature by women authors, but male authors have also taken on the female perspective. When writing about women it is possible that authors will describe them differently depending on gender, nationality, and culture. Authors of both genders have long experienced with narrators and protagonists of the opposite sexbut it is still debateable as to whether either sex can do it right? By studying these crucial scripts and seeing secondary sources about the writing styles of male and female, as well as the ways and means in which women are represented in literature, I have discussed and explained the understandings into the question of whether the gender of the author affects the way he or she writes about women? I have analysed manuscripts of female authors to find out whether or not they can predictably be defined as feminist.
