LATEST IMPROVEMENTS IN MICROSTRIP PATCH ANTENNA DESIGNS: A REVIEW ARTICLE

Abstract

Although the microstrip antenna has been extensively studied as one of the standard planar antennas in the past few decades, it still has tremendous potential for further development. Based on our past works on microstrip antenna elements and arrays, the paper proposes three areas for further study. One is exploring the spectrum of topologies for microstrip antennas to satisfy the desired requirements, such as ultra wide band (UWB), high gain, and miniaturisation, circular polarisation, multipolarized, and so on. Another is to apply a microstrip antenna that is more efficient than the actual antenna to form a composite antenna. The latter is increasing by the use of advanced machining techniques to highly integrate the antenna/array and feeding network or operate at relatively high frequencies, such as sub millimetre wave or terahertz (THz) wave regime. Some examples of antennas produced in our community are presented and discussed to support our points of view.
