POWER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT USING STATCOM WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE
Abstract
The renewable energy sources play an important role in electric power generation with growing environmental concerns. The inter connection of renewable energy sources are incorporated using power electronics converters, with the aim of improving power quality at the point of common coupling (PCC). STATCOM is used for reactive power compensation. Voltage source inverter with a DC link capacitor is called STATCOM. STATCOM and renewable energy resource are interfaced with each other in this project. Thus, STATCOM is used innovatively as a load reactive power compensator and an interface unit between the load and renewable energy resource. Multiple control units used for controlling the STATCOM and renewable energy resource separately, are replaced by a single controller unit as they are interfaced with each other. By the above proposed idea, real and reactive power flow would be controlled with help of single voltage source inverter. Switching losses will be reduced due to absence of multiple converters. Overall cost of system will be reduced.
