Exploring the Ideas of Kazi Nazrul Islam in the Context of South Asia

Abstract

This article tries to locate the ideas of dissent, nationalism, feminism, fascism, fanaticism, secularism and religious tolerance in Nazruls writings. To locate these ideas, this article reviews his writings which are in the form of poems, songs, commentaries. The article also reviews the works of other authors regarding Nazrul Islam's work. This paper is an effort to outline the ferocious works of Kazi Nazrul Islam in than socio-historic writings. The whole of South Asia was historically imagined as a united region which shared a common history of oppression, dissent leading towards delineation of boundaries due to decolonization. Present South Asia is witnessing broader political, social changes. As far as the regional image of South Asia is concerned it represents itself as a fast-developing region. But the rise of fascism, ongoing communalism, religious intolerance, and ethnocentrism in the region particularly presents a contrasting image. His writings explore the themes of love, freedom, revolution which could inspire the ongoing sentiments against prevalent dogmas. The article tries to explore the social-historical context of his writing and how his ideas could be implied in contemporary South Asia.
