Abstract

- The acoustical performance of a single expansion chamber
muffler having center inlet-center outlet and center inlet-side outlet
arrangement is analyzed to measure Transmission Loss. The Reactive
Muffler is the automotive element which is used for the reduction of sound
pressure level. Transmission Loss of a central inlet and side outlet muffler is
evaluated by Transfer Matrix Method for different configuration of outlet.
Transmission Loss for both the muffler arrangements having different outlet
location with the same space volume has been analyzed. The effect of
various side outlet location of the simple expansion chamber duct on its
acoustical performance was evaluated. In this paper, the principle of
Transfer Matrix Method for calculating the transmission loss of a muffler is
applied. Lastly it is predicted that the acoustical performance of muffler can
improve by adopting the suitable configuration of the muffler.
