Executive Functioning Correlates with Coping of College Students

Abstract

Background & Objectives: Executive functioning has a major role in individuals affect and
behavioral process. However, there is dearth of studies that have assessed its association with
individuals coping strategies. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine the associations
between executive function and coping in college students.
Methods: The sample comprised 70 young adult between the age of 18 to 25. The executive
functioning of students was measured by Stroop task and coping was assessed with Coping Strategy
Scale developed by A.K Srivastava.
Results: The executive functioning was found positively correlated with cognitive coping, behavior
coping and cognitive- behavior coping strategies and negatively correlated with cognitive avoidance
and behavior avoidance strategies among college students.
Conclusion: It suggests that youth with executive function deficit may encounter greater challenges in
coping with stressors. These findings could be implemented in planning intervention and counseling
program for young adult college students
