Abstract

The generation of ROS leading to oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation are responsible for late
complications of diabetes mellitus. In present study, we examined possible protective effect of
methanolic extract of fruit of Carica papaya Linn. in experimental alloxan (150 mg/kg) induced diabetic
rats. The effects of methanolic extract on fasting blood glucose level, oxidative stress parameters such
as malondialdehyde levels, advanced oxidation protein products and glutathione in liver homogenates,
were observed. AUC (400 mg/ kg/ day p.o.) was administered to a group of diabetic rats for 11
consecutive days and was compared with glibenclamide (n=6, 10 mg/ kg/ day p.o.). Administration of
AUC caused a significant reduction of FBGL (p< 0.001), MDA (p<0.001), AOPP (p<0.05). AUC
decreased the oxidative stress by increasing GSH levels (p<0.05). Based on our data it can be
concluded that Carica papaya Linn. has moderate antihyperglycemic effect attributed to its antioxidant
potential.
