Contribution of Film Societies and Cinema Sustainability: Delhi based Focus Group Study

Abstract

Cinema as the medium of mass communication has played an important role to give infinite flexibility to disseminate information to the masses. Cinema is considered as a powerful medium of communication that leaves an impact on the minds of the viewers for a long duration. It is a fantasy world for a viewer through which a connection between the medium and a viewer is to be made through various elements of cinema like music, star-cast, scenes, location etc. Film societies are also playing an important role to make cinema alive in the hearts of spectators. As a common parlance, film societies are the platform where an intellectual discussion happens after the screening of movie. Not only this, other activities are also taken up by the film societies that are contributing in bringing about sustainability through cinema. Sustainability through cinema is a much discussed subject these days which is helpful in bringing about awareness and sensitizes the viewers within the society. Film societies in Delhi are also contributing for sustainability by carrying out various activities from time to time. The present research is a focused group study among the members of the film societies which are active in Delhi. Five members from different active film societies were approached for the study to get an overview of their sustainability activities through cinema and their spectators. This research tries to explore the contribution of film societies for sustainable approach within the society.
