Abstract

Trauma [origin: Greek] refers to physical injury incurred as a result of violence, accident or other hazard, due to natural or man-made causes. In the 21st century, motor vehicle accidents have become a major source of trauma to human society world wide. World Health Organisation through its various reports, stated that 90% of fatalities resulting from road accident injuries occur in low and middle-income countries, mostly among vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists. Thus been estimated that road accident fatalities in India constitute 11 percent of global road deaths. Looking to the gravity of accident deaths across the Globe, the UN General Assembly in 2010 vide resolution 64/255 declared Year 2011 -2020 as a Decade of Action for Road Safety with the objective of reducing global fatalities on roads. India become signatory of this resolution and adopted various measures to bring down road accidents on Indian roads.
