Abstract

In the nineteenth century, Bengal played a significant role in political movement and evolution of political thought in Indian history. After Derozio joined Hindu College as a teacher, some young men in Bengal, inspired by his thinking and interpretation of western philosophy, criticized the British government's anti public interest activities and policies. They were aware of the activities of the British government . The demand for justice could be heard in their voices. They believe in the ideals of French Revolution' and English radicalism. They made a significant contribution to the growth of awareness of political independence of Indians by agitating for freedom  of the press and the embargo imposed by the government on public meetings and spoke out against unscrupulous labour practices in Mauritius, the extension of the right to justice by jury, the oppression of the indigo planters and the introduction of English as a official language in court. They also wanted an end to forced labour of government appointed coolies. They sent a petition to the British Parliament demanding justice and they led the movement against the impediment to the progress of the Indian merchants. They sought to improve the condition of their countrymen in a constitutional manner.
