Self Help Groups: A Strategic Approach For Women Empowerment

Abstract

Self Help Groups (SHGs), in India playing a meaningful contribution in improving the country's economy. Generally, the share of GDP is the key to boosting the economy of any developing country like India and again it reflects the poverty level. SHGs are a comprehensive and innovative program designed for the upliftment and well-being of women in India. In India every woman has the opportunity to join any SHGs for start training and their development, in order to become potential entrepreneurs and qualified workers. Self Help Groups are being set up by the Indian Government because Indian women may not have enough resources to be entrepreneurs. Empowerment is a transformational practice that allows one to chance to make decisions. Empowerment given superior opening for knowledge and resources, greater independence to make their own decision, more ability to plan for life, more control over situations that affect life, and feeling free from many culture, beliefs and practices. Self-help groups could overcome exploitation; create self confidence in the financially freedom of rustic population, especially women whose role is less visible in society. This paper examines SHGs and the women empowerment and also explains the current and historic situation of women and their empowerment in India. The present study is utterly based on secondary data.
