Religion as a Mean to Nationalism

With Reference to the Novel Kanthapura by Raja Rao

Abstract

The novel Kanthapura revolves around the freedom movement of India led by Gandhi. Moorthy is the protagonist who tries to promote the ideology of Gandhi throughout the nation. There is a great level of resistance in the village Kanthapura where the police authority is forced to oversee the daily life of the people. The people of Kanthapura seek help of religion to continue the freedom movement in order to avoid unnecessary resistance from the police. They forwarded their movement under the guise of religion. The objective of the paper is to examine the religion as tool used in the freedom movement.
