Abstract

The Oedipus complex is a term proposed by Sigmund Freud. He was a psychologist in Italy.After going through the source of Oedipus complex and Freudian theory of Oedipus complex, itsseen that the 20th century British writer D.H Lawrences novel Sons and Lovers is the strong evidence of the Oedipus complete. The protagonist of this novel Pauls behaviour reflect the Oedipus complex . Lawrence explorethe twisted human nature and the soul in this novel, and criticized modern industrial civilizationin west which disturbs the natural instincts of human.
The term Oedipus hasbeen derived from the name of the king Oedipus of Thebes who, though in ignorance married his own mother and had children with her.Oedipus complex it isa term used by Sigmund Freud in his THEORY OF PSYCHOSEXUAL STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT to describe a childs feeling of desire towards his or her opposite sex parent and jealousy anger towards his or hersame sexparent.For a example a boy feels that he is competing with his father for attaining his own mothers love and affection in same case for girls towards mothers because of their affection towards theirfather. According to Freud, children view their same sex parent as a rival for the opposite sex parents attention and affections. He first applied this concept in his book THE INTERPRETATION OF DREAMS, even though he did not formally begin to use the term Oedipus complex until the year 1910. This concept became important as he continued his concept of psychosexual development.
Freud named the complex after the character IS SOPHOCLES Oedipus Rex killshis father accidently and marries his own mother. Oedipus complexis a state in which a person shows excessive affection for the parent in opposite sexton him or herself,and a corresponding distaste for his or her parent.
The Oedipus in Sons and Lovers
Graham Hough in his discussion of sons and lovers in the Dark Sun says thatthe whole situation (in the novel)presents the Freudian Oedipus imbroglio in almost classic completeness.Being disillusioned with her husband Walter Morel, Mrs Morel gradually casts him off and takes her two sons William and Paul as husband substitutes one after the other, thus wrecking their emotional life.
