An Ode to Dance: Some Reflections

  • G. Bangla Bharthi

Abstract

The Indian classical dance is the most effective and beautiful disciplining of the human body in the entire universe, which has a unique appeal for all ages. The fundamental principles of dance urge one to explore how much the human body is capable. "Dance is the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and within a given space", where the dancer releases energy or simply delights the audience in the movement itself. The root idea behind all dance forms is the Dance of Shiva, the clear manifestation of primal rhythmic energy. The highest activity that any art, race or religion can boast is dance. According to ancient Greek writer, Lucian,   dancing came into being at the beginning of all things and was brought to light together with Eros, who set forth the primaeval dancing manifested in the choral dance of the constellations, the planets, the stars and their inter-weaving and interchanging into an orderly harmony. Indian classical dance is the most defined form of aesthetic communication. Unlike the western dance which is a propulsive form of physical activity to keep the body in rhythm and movement, Indian classical dance incorporates facial expression, movement of limbs and the diverse emotions for all possible occasions and every conceivable character. An Ode to Dance is an attempt to present some reflections on dance as an art of self-expression. [233 words]
