Abstract

Unlike Indian experience of service sector dominated economic growth, Gujarat witnessed faster growth on the strength of  its flourishing  industrial sector in the post reforms era. Despite attainment of high economic growth, the social indicators of the State are in depressing state- the fact highlights the need for analyzing the role of education in the economic growth especially of secondary education which is expected to have contributed towards industrial growth. Hence, this paper attempts to examine the interrelationship   and causality between economic growth and education at secondary level in Gujarat during the post reforms period  i.e 1992-93 to 2016-17 taking real per capita Net State Domestic Product as an indicator for economic growth and Gross Enrollment Ratio at secondary level as an indicator for education. The time series analysis has been conducted after checking the existence of unit root and having made the series stationary. The analysis proceeds with the econometric techniques of co-integration and Granger Causality. The empirical analysis finds  a long run equilibrium relation between enrolment ratio at secondary education and economic growth of Gujarat  but no causal relationship.
