Abstract

This paper focuses on the writings of   late nineteenth century and  twentieth century of India. The writings of great men shaped the struggle for independence in India. The creative writings during freedom movement was full of nationalist ideology. There were many writers who believed in liberal, secular and democratic ideas like Sarojini Naidu. There were writers like RabindraNath Tagore and Aurobindo who not only talked of a free country but the freedom of spirit too. We also find Gandhian ideas on pre-independence and post-independence period of English poetry and novels especially in the writings of R.K. Narayan and Raja Rao. The writers analyzed the socio-political situation of India, spiritual tradition and religions of the country. Indians ever believed in unity in diversity and embracing the world. Thus nationalist ideology in Indian English poets and novelists has universal strength as it is based on finer spiritual ideas of truth and tolerance.
