CLT: An Approach to Develop Communicative Proficiency of the ESL/EFL Learners

Abstract

The trends in language education is changing at a fast rate. Conventional concepts of education are giving way to newer and innovative ways of instruction in both imparting and acquiring knowledge. Collaborative approaches, as a result of emerging trends in teaching ESL/EFL are gaining prominence.  The increasing usefulness of communication skills in English Language has generated a great mandate for effective pedagogies for its teaching.  One of the prominent teaching trends in language teaching influencing the language instructors in the recent decades is the communicative, notional-functional approach. The basic ideology of the approach is that the learning of a language should be focused towards the learners acquiring communicative competence thereby permitting them to communicate in English language in the common situations in everyday life with accuracy and spontaneity. Communicative competence has become an obligatory tool for students to achieve the educational goals in addition to fulfilling their social purposes. It is the ability of a communicators to attain his objective through effective and appropriate interaction. The ESL teachers are striving hard to achieve success in helping the ESL learners to achieve a proficiency in their communication skills.This paper shall discuss certain strategies of Brainstorming the students so as to engage the learners in interactive sessions to develop spontaneity and fluency in their expression. The honed skill- set mentioned above would help the learners gain autonomy and add an edge in their employability skills adding on to their capacity of effectively dealing with the global demands.
