Anti-diabetic Activity of Black Berry (Syzygium cumini L): A Review

Abstract

Black Berry or Syzygium Cumini in India is commonly known as jambul, jambolan, jamblang or kala jamun. It belongs to the family Myrtaceae. Syzygium cumini (L.) is a widely used medicinal plant for the treatment of various ailments. The plant contains anthocyanins, glucoside, ellagic acid, isoquercetin, kaempferol and myricetin as its chief active constituents. These active cons isoquercetin, kaempferol tituents impart multiple pharmacological activities to the plant which includes antidiabetic, anticancer, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal and antidiarrhoeal activity. Diabetes mellitus is the most common endocrine disorders accompanied with many metabolic syndromes. Use of herbal medicines has been an option to treat a great number of diseases such as diabetes and its complications. In this review article we have detailed about anti-diabetic activity of seeds and leaves of Syzygium cumini (L.).
