Educational Philosophy of Alexander Sutherland Neill

Abstract

Alexander Sutherland Neill has been a prominent figure during 19th century Scotland. He has been one of the progressive educators of his times who stood against traditional system of schooling fostering childrens oppression and he advocated for their personal freedom. Though he did not operate any formal system of schooling, yet his ideas may be of great utility in reconstruction of Indian education.

Therefore in the present paper an effort has been made to explore educational promises and possibilities of Neill with special reference to concept of education, aims and objectives of education, curriculum, methods of teaching, role and duties of teachers, role and duties of parents, child discipline and female education and finally conclusion has been drawn to explore the relevance of his views in an Indian context.
