CSR activities of ONGC: A case study on Cauvery Delta Region

Abstract

CSR is considered as a way to fulfil the obligation of the industry and corporates towards the society. For achieving sustainable development, a company has to follow environment friendly business practices. In this article, the researcher has carried out the case study of an Indian maharatna company to describe its social and environmental initiatives through CSR. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is taken for the study and found that ONGC, a CPSU, is true to its mandate and had undertaken lot of CSR activities in and around its area of operations in Cauvery delta region. The data has been collected through direct interaction with the CSR officials of ONGC Cauvery asset and from secondary sources like official website of ONGC, journals, newspapers and published annual reports. Although prior research has addressed the CSR performance of Indian PSUs, as well as the CSR performance of ONGC, research related to Cauvery delta region remained untouched. This study tried to fill this gap through an extensive case study. The data has been collected through direct interaction with the CSR officials of ONGC Cauvery asset and from secondary sources like official website of ONGC, journals, newspapers and published annual reports. This study concluded with valuable recommendations to improve the norms, that leads to more effective implementation of CSR.
