Abstract

Valeriana jatamansi plays a crucial role in the world of medicinal herbsas it shows antiAlzheimer disease curing ability. The plant is commonly known by its trade name
Mushkbala? and ayurvedic name Tagar?. The underground parts of the plant are used as
hepatic and nervine tonic and shows antipyretic and diuretic properties. The medicinal herb is
uprooted and wildly exploited and has become an endangered plant now due to this
anthropogenic activity. Valeric acid and related compounds are straight chain alkyl
carboxylic acid and showed anti-AD properties. This compound is found naturally in
Valeriana spp. from which it gets its name. The review focus on thebiotechnological
strategies applied to enhance the various anti-AD compounds from the in vivoand in vitro
grown plant culture from the explants of the Valeriana officinalis. Moreover phytochemistry,
pharmacology, extraction and estimation of anti-AD compoundsfrom Valeriana jatamansi
and related species were also discussed in this review.
