PHOTONIC CRYSTAL FIBER AND ITS FUTURE

  • Suman Mukherjee .

Abstract

Since the discovery of the optical fiber, the telecommunication industry reached a new height
and it is still serving billions of humans all over the world. At the end of the 20th century a new
of types of material have been developed, known as photonic crystals, promises some
applications in different areas by virtue of its some of the unique and unconventional optical
properties, which is absent in conventional optical fiber materials. Because of its lower latency,
high damage threshold, reduced non-linearity, low loss in transmission etc. these materials are
capable of overcoming a lot of limitations presence in conventional fibres. In this short review,
some of the potential applications of photonic crystal fibres have been discussed and how it
would stand in future when it comes to its industrial applications comparing it with the
conventional approach used at present.
