SPATIAL PATTERN OF DISABILITY IN HIMACHAL PRADESH: AN OVERVIEW 2011

Abstract

According to World Health Organization a disability is an umbrella term, covering impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions. Impairment is a problem in body function or structure; an activity limitation is a difficulty encountered by an individual in executing a task or action; while a participation restriction is a problem experienced by an individual in involvement in life situations. Act 1995: This act provides 3 percent reservations for disabled people (blind or low vision, hearing impairment and locomotors disability or cerebral palsy in poverty alleviation programs, government posts, and in state educational facilities, as well as other rights and entitlement). As per Census 2011, in India, out of the 121 crore population, about 2.68 crore persons are disabled which is 2.21 percent of the total population. In the, 2011 Census of India, the following disabilities have been covered for enumeration (i) In seeing, (ii) In hearing (iii) In speech (iv) In movement (v) Mental Retardation (vi) Mental Illness, (vii) Multiple disabilities (viii) Any other. In Himachal Pradesh out of the 6856509 population, about 155316 are disabled which is 2.27 percent of the total population. This study is based on secondary sources of data. In this papers study the overview of Himachal Pradesh disability; 2011. This paper reviews research on the disability in Himachal Pradesh 2011. In the present paper examine the different types of disability according to the census of India.
