TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS: INFLUENCE OF PRINCIPALS LEADERSHIP STYLES

Abstract

Leadership style is a leaders method of providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people (Lewin, Lippit, White, 1939).While teacher effectiveness are the competencies in teachers needed for their functions and roles as well as planning and preparation for teaching, classroom management and knowledge of the subject matter, teacher characteristics and their interpersonal relation (Kulsum, 2010).Teacher effectiveness is perceived in terms of how supervisors rate teachers, student achievement, comments made by students, school administrators and other interested stakeholders. The present study was conducted to explore the influence of leadership styles of principals on teacher effectiveness of secondary schools teachers. The sample of the study included 150 teachers (112 males and 38 female teachers) from government and private schools of Chikwawa district of Malawi by employing simple one stage cluster sampling. The study showed that male teachers had more teacher effectiveness than their female counterparts. Further male teachers perceive that principals were better in transformational and transactional styles as compared to female teachers. Significant positive and strong relationship was found in transformational and transactional styles and teacher effectiveness of teachers.
