Abstract

Irrigation is required for successful cultivation of crops. Most importantly, adequate and timely supply of water is necessary for the proper growth of the crops. Nature has its own irrigation system which keeps vegetation and animal life alive, while it is also true that irrigation through human efforts is essential for plant life. From very ancient times, man has been using water from natural methods or collected rain water for irrigating agricultural crops. With the advancement of civilization, science and technology, bigger and bigger water reservoirs and canal irrigation systems came into existence which enabled large tracts of land to be irrigated so as to produce more food grains.  It has been made possible only through irrigated agriculture to meet the requirements of ever increasing population.
