Abstract

Physico-chemical parameters with special reference to phytoplankton of Vellar River were investigated for a period of one year (Feb 2018- Jan 2019. Physio-chemical studies of river showed high values of alkalinity, chlorides, hardness, BOD, COD indicating the pollution of riverine ecosystem. Present study reveled in all 60 genera and 136 species of Planktonic algae. The dominant group was chlorophyceae with 24 genera and 48 species followed by Cyanophyceae consisting 21 genera and 42 species Bacillariophyceae with 18 genera and 35 species while Euglenophyceae comprised 2 genera and 11 species. The phytoplankton population was dominant during summer while it declined during monsoon season Water flow, temperature, alkalinity, chlorides, free CO2, BOD, nitrate and phosphate influencing the occurrence and abundance of phytoplankton.
