Abstract

Photonic crystals with enhanced nonlinear optical properties have some improved functionalities that find applications in photonic sensors. Ultra sensitive detection is possible by using nonlinear photonic crystals which optical properties depend upon the intensity of the light propagating through the crystal. Nonlinear photonic crystals would make available a platform for designing and construction of compact and ultra fast all-optical sensors where light is used for control of light itself. The main nonlinear optical effects used in nonlinear photonic crystal sensors are frequency conversion, Kerr nonlinearity, Raman scattering, Optical bistability and Supercontinuum generation.
