Abstract

This paper reviews on alterative solar cell materials which can be efficiently utilized to fabricate high efficiency solar cells. In order to propose these materials, minimum necessary criteria that a particular material should possess were taken into account. A number of non-conventional compounds were found to be suitable for their acceptance in this promising technology. However, based on the criticality of the material synthesis, three potential candidates namely iron pyrite; cuprous oxide and tungsten diselenide are discussed in detail as absorber materials. Brief information on these materials like bandgap, methods of fabrication, electrical and optical properties has been provided for a quick access of the research community. Moreover, the newly developed transport materials are also reviewed which can be used for efficient fabrication of latest solar cell technology: Perovskite solar cells. This review will be helpful to the new researchers to identify their material of interest for the solar cell applications.
