Review on Ethnomedicinal, Pharmacological and Phytochemical Constituents of Abutilon Indicum (L.) Sweet

Abstract

Abutilon indicum (L.) Sweet is one of the most important plant species belonging to family Malvaceae. The entire plant or its specific parts like leaves, stem, roots, fruits and seeds are known to have medicinal properties and have a long history of use by tribal people in Dhenkanal district of Odisha. The plant is used as demulcent, aphrodisiac, laxative, diuretic, pulmonary, immunomodulatory, analgesic, antimicrobial and sedative. The leaves are used as astringent and to cure piles. The phytochemical analysis revealed the Presence of Alkaloid, Amino acid, Saponins, Flavonoids, Glycosides and steroids. This plant exhibits several potential pharmacological activities. The present review is therefore, an effort to give a detailed survey of the literature on the ethnomedicinal, phytochemical and pharmacological properties of A. indicum.
