Abstract

In India, at current situation, it is hardly possible to increase the production of food grains by bringing more land under agriculture. But however, supply of food grains can be increased by increasing the productivity in agriculture. In this context, the present study aims in studying the trend in area and production of major food crops in Chitradurga and Ballari districts of Karnataka state considering period from 1998-99 to 2017-18. The study found that, in Ballari and Chitradurga districts there was continuous decrease not only in the area under major food crops but also with its production. In Ballari, growth in area under horse gram recorded highest decrease against highest increase under maize cultivation. Regarding production highest growth was recorded maize cultivation and highest decrease in Castrol seed production. The productivity of sunflower witnessed highest growth rate against lowest maize productivity. However, productivity of Castrol seed witnessed negative growth rate. Similar trend was observed in Chitradurga district. In Ballari district, high instability was observed in area, production and productivity under Castrol seed, Ragi and Groundnut cultivation. In Chitradurga, high instability in area, production and productivity was observed in under sunflower, Bajra and Groundnut cultivation.
