Significance of Disaster Management on Vulnerability Mitigation of Agriculture in Tamil Nadu –A Retrospective Analysis

Abstract

Climate change is the worldwide phenomenon entails huge repercussions on Agricultural activities as the erratic calamities accentuated by climate change has endure the vulnerability of the agrarian situation in Tamil Nadu which affected by various obstacles. Natural calamities and unwanted rains adversely affects the agrarian activities. Recent, Gaja cyclone and earlier Thane cyclone devastated the livelihood of the thousands of farmers in Tamil Nadu. The present study attempted to map out the consequences of such calamities on agrarian structure in Cuddalore and Thanjavur districts as these two districts have affected heavily by the cyclone. The study conducted with 150 samples from each districts. The findings of the study revealed that natural calamities have totally destructed the livelihood of the farmers in both the districts and the rehabilitation activities has not reached adequate level. the study further found that natural calamities had significant influence on the food security of the rural people in the study area. Further, the study urged the need for proper adoption of disaster management to decelerate the vulnerability.
