Ironic Notions in the Poetry of A.K. Ramanujan with Special Reference to the Poems: “A River”, “Still Life” and “History”

Abstract

Irony is one of the significant literary devices used by the literary persons in all the genres of literature. Though its importance cannot be neglected in all forms of literature, yet undoubtedly it occupies unsurpassable place in the world of poetry. For many centuries, irony has been a chief creative methodology of the poets to leave their fine impressions in the minds of the readers. Among other Indian English poets, A.K. Ramanujan has excellently used irony to achieve the desired effect. His poems are dotted with the employment of irony it its different forms such as Verbal Irony, Structural Irony, Dramatic Irony, Socratic Irony, Cosmic Irony and Romantic Irony.
