Abstract

Emotions are an integral and inseparable part of everyday organizational life; they are difficult to measure and as such have generally been ignored in the literature. Stress is a growing problem worldwide and the experience of stress has long been implicated in the development of negative outcomes for the individual employee and the organization. Emotional Intelligence involves behaviors related to the experience of emotion; specifically EI involves expressing, recognizing, understanding and managing emotions. It is one of the biggest factor that contributes to the success of individuals who assume various tasks and roles in modern life. It is also important in determining how individuals cope with the stress that can potentially limit their emotional relationships, decrease their efficiency, and reduce the pleasure of life. The intertwined relationship between stress and emotion has also been proposed to play a significant role outcome of the employees. Recent research has begun to focus on the role of emotions in the workplace and examine the relationship between cognition and emotions. This aspect has largely been attributed to new research around the construct of Emotional Intelligence (EI). Despite the interest in workplace EI, very little research has examined the role EI play in stress. This paper theoretically examines the relationship between EI and the stress, including stressors, strains (health) and outcomes of stress (job satisfaction and organizational commitment)
