Nutritional status and quality of life of adults with type 2 diabetes

Abstract

Approximately 425 million people worldwide suffered with diabetes (2017), which is projected to increase to 629 million by 2045. Diabetes has gained status of epidemic in India with around 72.9 million diabetic patients currently and is expected to have highest number of diabetic patients by 2045 if appropriate preventive measures are not taken. Diabetes is a very expensive disease resulting in a big economic burden on individual, their families and healthcare system of country. The prevention of diabetes and its complications is a major challenge for healthcare system across the world. Self-management of diabetes is considered as economically effective and integral part of diabetes care, nutritional education being an integral component which helps a diabetic patient to understand the nature of the illness, its treatment and empower them for self-management of disease. In present research results represented majority of enrolled subject belong to middle and upper middle status with highest proportion of subject (31%) having completed education till senior secondary. Pre obesity was reported in 42% subjects, 91% subjects having waist hip ratio greater than WHO cut off of Asian indicating increased metabolic risk. Body composition analysis of subjects reported, 51 % subjects with high body fat, 49% subjects having high visceral fat and 90% subjects had low skeleton muscle. Majority of subjects (52%) reported to have normal blood pressure, 78% subjects were found to have unsatisfactory blood glucose level. To evaluate quality of life of subject SF-36 questionnaire was interviewed. The subject scored lowest in general health dimension 60.96 % and highest in roll-emotional (84.1 1%) and roll-physical (82%) dimension.
